Enjoy A Walk With Your Puppy
Dog training should be started in the earliest months of a dog’s life. Puppies are more easily trained than adult dogs.
All dogs should first be taught to wear a collar that is the right size. Dog collars cannot be too big as to fall off or too tight as to choke the dog.
First, train your dog to wear the right sized collar. Make sure it is not too large or too small and that it fits properly around his neck.
Collars should be loose enough to fit a thumb between the collar and skin of your dog. Early on your puppy may find the collar annoying and try to take it off.
Your puppy will give up trying to remove the collar after several days and will begin to feel comfortable. Wait patiently for this to happen.
Attached to the collar is a leash which allows you to safely walk your puppy. A leash is a long cord which attaches to the puppy’s collar and allows you to dictate where your pet is able to go.
Your puppy will try to run away when let outside for the first time. That is why it is important to train the puppy to walk on a leash straight away.
Make sure your dog know it can go only so far on the leash. This distance should be enough that your puppy feels free to walk.
Don’t allow bad behavior from your dog and stop whenever your dog pulls you.
Once stopped, make your puppy come to you and then start walking again. If puppy keeps pulling, stop and correct again.
By stopping, you will frustrate the puppy and it will stop pulling. Eventually, the puppy will learn it cannot go far on the leash.
Repetition is the key to helping your puppy understand walking on a leash. Practice this exercise with your puppy at least five minutes at a time.
Training an adult dog is the same as training a puppy. But an adult dog can be more difficult than a puppy. So it is best to start training the dog as soon as you bring it home.
