Dogs, like humans learn habits and rules during their first stages in life. The older the dog the harder to change patterns in their behavior.

I couldn’t believe one little dog could cause so much trouble and anxiety but whenever I unwittingly told my best mate that I’d love to give his dog a new home I got a lot more grief than I bargained for.

Praise and doggy treats go a long way but not for unlearning something. You can train your dog a new talent fairly successfully as it hasn’t been preconditioned to act in a certain way but identifying and controlling bad behavior is a lot more difficult.

Also as an adult how difficult it can be to break old habits
The dog, having never been house trained, was accustomed to it being a free for all in all the rooms of my home and stopping this behavior was going to take a lot of patience and work.

It is much harder to communicate to a adult dog that it’s doing something wrong when it doesn’t understand how to behave differently.

The more accustomed the dog becomes to your instruction and care the more he will listen to your commands.

I thought I’d start by helping the dog feel comfortable being around me and help him to trust that I was his friend. Dogs want to please those that love them and respond better when they are given attention.

I found a make shift bed that was just the right size for him. Not too big as to confuse but not too to be cramped or cruel.

A consistent pattern of events becomes a habit as you retrain you dog’s brain to follow your instructions and he will notice and copy what you show him. Being vague or changing a routine will only make things harder for him to learn.

When teaching an older dog new habits you must be consistent or you’ll confuse him and the lesson will take longer to sink in.

Dogs have a very keen sense of smell and are also very territorial. Washing away the evidence of a recent toilet trip masks the smell that is unique to your dog.

A dog associates certain smells with certain places and certain actions. There is a reason dogs are used as sniffer dogs by the police; their sense of smell is amazing. A lasting odor of urine or feces attracts the dog to the same spot to go again.

Your dog will make mistakes and go to the toilet in the house until he’s learnt differently. Strong cleaning fluids will remove the smell of previous transgression and encourage the dog to go elsewhere.

Above, I alluded to buying some kind of pen for your dog. Make sure he stays there and gets used to resting in that place.

Your dog will associate this pen with safety and rest and will not pollute the area with smells that will make him uncomfortable.

Dogs are very clean animals and will not defile their own sleeping quarters. Making him sleep in the same spot will denote it as his and he will respect it.

Being consistent in your approach will help your dog learn over time that your house is not a canine lavatory but outside is permissible.

In conclusion, you don’t want your dog anxious and fretting in the middle of the night or waking up the whole house to be let out so be sensible about when and how much you feed him.

Everything is possible if you’re willing to work with your pet and not against him. He will learn from you and respond to you and soon will be running outside every time he needs a rest stop.

Just be sure to praise his good behavior and show him lots of affection as like a child. He learns from your attitude and example.
