Stop Dog Barking With A Dog Silencer
My neighbor’s dog, although a really great dog, happens to bark the night away and really disturbs me. I thought this was a fact of life and I never even thought of using a dog silencer before. I wasn’t even sure they existed, and if so, how to get one. I did however read an article in a pet journal which talked about a product to stop dog barking but I didn’t take it much further than that at the time. Then trolling through my channels, I saw it again on an infomercial.
For the most part my own dog is relatively well behaved and doesn’t bark a whole lot. Only, when company comes or the kids get him riled up but my neighbor’s dog is a different story. She’s a great dog but my bedroom window happens to be very close to my property line and seems even closer to the neighbors patio where the dog roams late at night. I know dog barking is instinctual but getting a break once in awhile would be incredible.
Most dog barking stems from a desire to communicate. We have all heard the heroic stories of dogs saving people by alerting them to danger or trouble and we surely don’t want to stifle that behavior so what is the best approach?
The first thing I think of when I hear the term dog silencer is a shock collar. They seem archaic and torturous for the animal. I can’t believe this would be very humane at all. The idea is that an electrical shock is administered every time he does an undesired behavior. The hope is that the dog would somehow figure out why he is being shocked and learn something from it. This is negative reinforcement and the dog won’t like it one bit. It may work well in some cases but definitely not for me.
Dog Whistles are also popular dog training aids. The whistle’s frequency will annoy the dog somehow and get them to do anything to make the trainer stop blowing it. Over time they will associate that frequency and annoyance with a command from the trainer and again, hope to learn something. It may work great but who has the time. Further, I can’t really ask my neighbor if I can spend time and money training his dog.
It seems there are quite a few training methods which could be successful in teaching your dogs commands and ultimately controlling dog barking. Another is hand signals. This could be great again assuming you have the time to learn them and train your dog. And then comes the question, what if the dog is blind or has failing vision. I would think a dog in this condition might bark even more. In my case this won’t help through the fence and with my luck the dog would just turn its head.
So now these ultrasonic dog silencers begin to look more and more appealing. Even though we often see them advertised on late night television, there are several different brands on the market. Some are better than others and operate in different ways. I’m most interested in the ones you just flip on and that’s it.
I would love something that was just simple. I want to turn it on and when the dog barks this magical wave it emitted and the dog stops barking. The bark off works this way and I like the concept. In theory when the dog barks he is focused on whatever is commanding his attention. This ultrasonic wave serves to distract the dog and interrupt the dog’s barking pattern. That’s all, plain and simple.
I still can’t tell if all of these devices work all the time because each dog is different. There is even some evidence that certain breeds and ages are better suited for this device than others. Some dogs are aggressive while others are passive. Some are vocal while others are timid and each dog may be barking for a different reason. The good news here is that the bark off dog silencer is only $10 so it is cheap enough to buy and experiment on your dog without any major investment
Bark Off worked well for my dog who unfortunately was never my problem. The neighbor’s dog barks a little less but I have no real proof it was do to the bark off but I keep it by my bed anyway.
So the good news for those suffering from annoying dog barking is that there are several methods to try and control it. If you don’t have time to train your dog or don’t have access to the neighbor’s dog, you may want to try some type of dog silencer.
