Training A Puppy – To Get A Male Or Female Dog

If you are going to own a dog, the sex of dog you choose will be an important factor. Males tend to be more aggressive than females towards their handlers and also during encounters with dogs in your neighborhood.

Housebreaking a dog will take time and patience. Female dogs are mostly easily trainable compared to male dogs. They also fair much better when brought to dog training courses. The reason for this that male dogs need to be more aggressive to survive on the wild. The more aggressive the dog the higher the survivability rate and the higher its chance to become the alpha male that gets to breed with all the females in the pack.

Studies have shown that that males dogs have a greater tendency also to be more destructive and also children are at a greater risk of getting bitten by male dogs than the female counterparts.

It is in the instincts of male dogs to wander off from your home. In the wild, dogs are vagabonds and do not call any place their home. Males will usually roam around looking for food and shelter. Controlling a new male dog to not urine mark the corners and walls of your home can take some time. This trait belongs to male dogs – urine marking is the way in which male dogs mark their territories.

They will also be more likely to mount and show aggression to visitors as well as other dogs. Generally they will investigate your female visitors by directly sniffing them.

According to research, the dogs tend to be more affectionate towards their handlers if they were the opposite sex. The studies have shown that female dogs tend to react more favorably towards their male handlers.

After approximately 3 months from birth, a male puppy reaches it’s juvenile stage where it becomes extremely active, playful and curious. They will also become more independent and will not call for their mother or handler as much as before. Another sign of sexual maturity which is common amongst male dogs is the lifting of the hind leg in order to urine mark their spots. Urine marking within the house should be forbidden thus you will need to train your dog accordingly.

Dogs urine mark to leave their scent trail to let other dogs in the area know of their presence, especially the female dogs. The scent marks the boundary of its territory and basically warns intruders that if they cross that line, there will be trouble. While females also drop their scent marks, it happens much less often and is designed to let the males know how receptive she is to mating. The mating seasons for a female dog usually only begins 8 months after birth.

Before a bitch’s first seasons she will show no particular interest in male dogs in any sexual way; however once she comes into season, males become attracted to her, and she then shows a responsive interest in them. From day 10 of her first season a mating can occur as she has become receptive.
